Belonging to the AKC’s Sporting Group, the Flat-Coated Retriever is a medium sized dog, standing 22-25 inches tall and weighing around 60-70 pounds. The average lifespan of a Flat-Coated Retriever is 8-10 years. These dogs are prized for their kind expression, distinctive long head, lustrous coat, and energetic disposition.

Flat-Coated Retrievers are very affectionate with family members and can play non-stop. They do exceptionally well with young children and other dogs. Everyone a Flat-Coated Retriever meets immediately becomes their best friend, yet they do have a protective instinct and can make good watchdogs.

This is a highly adaptable breed that can pretty much adjust to any lifestyle as well as frequent changes in routine. However, this breed is not suitable for apartment dwelling or novice pet owners. Flat-Coated Retrievers can adapt to both hot and cold climates.

Flat-Coated Retrievers are eager to please, intelligent, and responsive which makes them quite easy to train. They are sensitive by nature, however, and do well with gentle, yet firm guidance rather than harsh training methods. This breed is moderately mouthy and has a moderate wanderlust tendency and prey drive.

These dogs have very high energy levels and need to stay active and mentally stimulated to remain happy and healthy. Long walks or vigorous play sessions should be the order of the day with this breed. While not overly vocal, Flat-Coated Retrievers do bark on occasion.

The Flat-Coated Retriever’s medium length smooth coat is relatively fuss-free, requiring only weekly brushings to remove debris and stay mat-free. The coat does shed moderately however, and they are moderate droolers as well.

All in all, Flat-Coated Retrievers are 18-forever pooches, always young at heart, outdoorsy, mischievous, cheerful, confident, and active. If you think this is the perfect breed for your family, check out listings of reputable breeders of Flat-Coated Retrievers on Puppy Hero.
