According to the American Kennel Club, the top three breeds in Utah are Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Labrador Retrievers. This pretty much mirrors the trends nationwide. Perhaps you’re interested in bringing one of these puppies into your home in Utah. Or maybe you have your eye on a not-so-popular breed.
Whichever breed you choose, there are some things to keep in mind to ensure your dog’s safety during the warm Utah summers. Here are some hot weather pet safety tips if you’re a dog parent in Utah.
When the mercury starts climbing in the spring and summer, your dog is at risk of developing a host of heat-related problems. While your dog may love car rides, vets recommend that you avoid taking her with you when you go out to run errands. You should never leave a dog unattended in a car, even with the window cracked open. Temperatures can climb pretty quickly to dangerous levels, even if you’re parked in a shady spot. Plus, your pet could accidentally knock the vehicle out of parking gear, resulting in an accident.
You should make sure your dog has plenty of fresh, clean water in the summer months. Keep his water bowl full at home. And when you head outdoors for a walk, remember to carry a bottle or two of water for your pooch.
Since humans are usually wearing shoes or sandals when outdoors, it’s easy to forget that your dog’s paws are not similarly protected. Asphalt and pavements can get very hot during the summer months, causing serious injuries. Check the temperature with your fingers before allowing your pet to walk on them. Avoid heading outdoors during peak sunshine hours (10 am to 4 pm). If you must go out when it’s hottest, consider buying booties for your pooch to protect her paws.
